Welcome!
This page is dedicated to the work I have done with my Professional Inquiry Project (PIP) for my Professional Semester III internship as a student teacher under the University of Lethbridge. Throughout this page you will find a collection of my work, resources and strategies to help engage reluctant readers.
The Inspiration and Rationale for the Project
Before beginning my Professional Inquiry Project (PIP), I was at a loss of what to focus my project on and I was uncertain of where to begin. It was during the first week of school, however, that I was introduced to the D.E.A.R. program (Drop Everything and Read) and realized that this could be a starting point for my PIP. Having taken an interest in the D.E.A.R. program, I began researching why the initiative had been started and what impacts it can have on students. I then sought feedback from my Teacher Mentor on having the D.E.A.R. program as the central focus of my PIP and he provided me with useful tips and insight to get me started.
One of the books that I found while researching ideas around the D.E.A.R program was Readicide by Kelly Gallagher. In it, he focuses on why students are reading less, and poses the argument that schools are partially to blame for the rise in reluctant readers. Based on this, and other sources, a desire grew within me to help engage reluctant readers. How can I use D.E.A.R. as an effective opportunity assist and engage students in active reading skills. How can I shift the mentality of reading for academia, to reading for enjoyment? How can I prevent Readicide, from happening in Stirling?
Inquiry Question: To what extent can we, as educators, actively engage reluctant readers, and what strategies can we effectively use to help them?
